Chapter Sixteen
Itâs early the next morning when I quietly let myself into my motherâs apartment.
âI was wondering if you would come home.â Mom is sitting in her favorite chair, a mug of coffee to her side. âYour friends are worried about you. Whose shirt are you wearing? I wasnât aware you were seeing anyone.â
âItâs mine.â Heath has slipped in behind me. Iâd thought weâd agreed he would stay outside while I grabbed a few things, but I should have known he would stay close. He moves toward her, a hand out like the polite man heâd been raised to be. âIvy got caught in the rain yesterday and needed to borrow something. Hello again, Mrs. Jensen.â
She gets to her feet. Sheâs dressed but hasnât put on the makeup she wears most days even if she doesnât go out. âHello, young man from my fire escape. Ivy didnât mention you were seeing each other in that fashion. I believe she told me you were business partners.â
He nods. âYeah. She struggles when it comes to defining relationships. I think any way you look at it youâll probably be seeing more of me.â
âWell, I hope youâre nothing like the last one. He should be in jail.â
âMom,â I whisper under my breath.
Heath gives her a bright smile guaranteed to melt the heart of any woman in a two-mile radius. âSheâs right. He was an asshole. Now if you donât mind, Iâll use your bathroom if thatâs okay. I took Ivy out for donuts and drank way too much coffee.â
She nods and shows him which hall to go down. Itâs the only hall, really, so he shouldnât have too much trouble.
She looks tired in the early morning light, and I donât really want to fight with her. Talking things through with my friends last night made me realize how often in the last few years Iâd gone into fight-or-flight mode.
âIâm picking up some things and then weâre going back to his place, so donât worry. I wonât bother you this weekend. Iâll send you money on Monday for the month. Is it only rent you want? I know I ate some stuff you bought last week. And drank some of the milk.â
Sheâs watching the hall, studying Heath as he disappears. âJust the rent is fine. I suspect youâll be out of the place more than in it now that youâreâ¦working again.â
I do not understand her, and Iâm worried I never will. I donât know how everyone else in my life can be supportive and she simply canât. But Iâm tired of fighting her, and I told Heath I wouldnât be long. âAll right then.â
She looks my way. âYouâre not even going to apologize for not checking in last night?â
âChecking in with you?â Iâm surprised at the inference. âI didnât think you were watching when I come and go. Mom, Iâm honestly surprised you would be worried.â
âWhat is that supposed to mean?â
âIt means that I wasnât aware that you would care if I didnât come home at all.
